The
mayor of New York is elected every four years. The electing
demographic region is made up of the five New York boroughs
of Manhattan, The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island.
The current mayor of New York, now in his second term, is
Michael R. Bloomberg.
The 2001
mayoral election was held on Tuesday, November 6.2001
Mayoral elections occurred while Republican incumbent Rudy
Giuliani was term-limited. As Democrats outnumber Republicans
by 5 to 1 in the city, it was widely believed that a Democrat
would succeed him in City Hall. However, billionaire Michael
Bloomberg, a lifelong Democrat, changed his party affiliation
a few months before the election in order to avoid a crowded
primary and ran as a Republican. |

The Democratic primary, held on September 25, a few days after September
11 attacks, opened the way to a bitter run-off between Ferrer, a
Hispanic, and Green, a caucasian, that left the Party divided along
racial lines.Eventually, with the support of Mayor Giuliani, Bloomberg
won a very close general election.
Manhattan is a borough of New York City, USA, coterminous with New
York County. Although its population of 1.6 million is only third
largest of the five boroughs (after Brooklyn and Queens), it is
the most densely populated county in the United States. The Island
of Manhattan is the largest section of the borough (and county),
which also includes numerous smaller islands and a small section
of the mainland adjacent to the Bronx.
Manhattan is the borough that
some tourists most closely associate with New York City. A commercial,
financial, and cultural center of the world, Manhattan has many
famous landmarks, tourist attractions, museums and universities.
It is also home to the headquarters of the United Nations and the
seat of city government. Historically, its commercial streets have
been characterized by thousands of unique and diverse shops, though
a more recent influx of national chains has caused it to increasingly
resemble other American cities and suburbs at a higher density.
New York City is home to the most corporate headquarters of any
city in the nation, the overwhelming majority based in Manhattan.
Midtown Manhattan is the largest central business district in the
United States. Lower Manhattan is home to the nation's third-largest
central business district, as well as both the New York Stock Exchange
and NASDAQ. |
